nine years

my eleanor isobel is turning nine years old on the twenty ninth of this month and i could literally cry buckets of tears. from the day she was born, she has been the light of my life. she has taught me more than anyone else could ever teach me ... she taught me how to be a mother, a friend and a better human. like, she has been everything for me.

today her and i went on a little day date to the thrift store and then had lunch at tropical smoothie (her favorite place to eat). it was just a simple, short, little getaway, but it was so good for our relationship. since her brothers were born, finding one on one time has been pretty tough, but we make it happen when we can because it is so, so, so important ... she had three dollars saved and big hopes of finding a porcelain doll. she named her emily because we are in the middle of reading a little princess and emily is the name of sara crewe's doll. i love that.

anyway, i can't believe my girl is nine. her birthday party is the twenty eighth and we have been making lists and planning our little hearts out. the theme this year is classic trolls and american girl because she couldn't choose and i'm like, how bout both! ... can't wait. xo

motherhood affirmations / how to stop comparing

when i was a little girl, i never once asked myself, "i wonder if my mom compares herself to other moms?" like, i knew that every mom had their own way of doing things, but i guess i never questioned how that made my mom feel. why would that even be something that she would worry about? anyway, maybe she didn't compare (I've never asked her) and maybe not all moms do, but i feel like some do .. and i feel that even though comparing your motherhood to someone elses is totally damaging, i also think it's probably pretty normal.

when i became a mother, back in 2008, i was basically a kid myself. i knew very little about what to expect and honestly, was a little aloof to the whole being a mom thing. i didn't compare myself to other moms because i didn't know any other moms in real life and the social media beast hadn't swallowed me up yet ... things were easier back then for me. sure, i made sooooo many mistakes, but i was confident. i knew that i loved my baby and that was the only guide i needed. so now i ask myself, what happened to that confidence? why do i overanalyze every mom move i make? why do i scroll through social media and think things like, "i wish i could be more like her?"

basically my point here is to put an end to that and start fresh again. here are some things i have been jotting down in my mind to help get me there.

1. it doesn't matter whatsoever what time another mom puts her baby to bed and where her baby sleeps. it doesn't matter at all.

2. it doesn't matter how another mom gave birth and where she gave birth and how long the birth lasted and how much her baby weighed. it doesn't matter at all.

3. it doesn't matter if her baby only eats avocado and your baby has a popsicle for breakfast. it doesn't matter.

4. it doesn't matter if all of your babies were born via cesarean and don't you dare hesitate to announce that. (me)

5. if you hang around a mom friend who is constantly making comparisons out loud by saying things like, "oh well my kid .."  shut that shit down (politely, of course).

6. if you follow a mom on social media that gives you feelings of self doubt, unfollow. it is totally okay to do that and you will feel so much lighter.

7. stop thinking things like, "she's more beautiful than i am" and start thinking things like, "she is beautiful and so am i."

8. don't look at another mom and immediately find something to judge her for. look for something to be inspired by instead.

9. remember that it is just as easy to lift yourself up as tear yourself down.

10. it doesn't matter if her kids are in all the activities and yours are not. it doesn't matter.

11. it doesn't matter that another mom's house looks like something out of a magazine and your couch has permanent marker scribbles all over it and you can't afford to replace it. (me, ha ha) it doesn't matter.

12. lastly, you love your children more than anything and you are doing an amazing job. give yourself a little more credit.

can anyone relate? xo

self worth and some photos

today has been pretty stressful. let me rephrase that - i have been really stressful. my husband even told me so earlier tonight. i'm not sure what my deal is, really. i guess i have been struggling with self worth lately. i mean, that's no excuse to be a stressful person, but maybe that's the reason anyhow. i am trying to figure out where i fit. is being a mother enough? am i supposed to be working towards something else? something just for me? or should i stop asking that question and just live. i feel such a pressure to keep up with other women. like so and so are off doing something wonderful AND being a mom. women are starting businesses and writing books while mothering and i get down on myself because i think why can't i do it all? why is it too much for me? it is especially hard when i open instagram on an exceptionally stressful day and see things other women are posting. on those days, it seems as if they are standing on top of a mountain wearing big smiles and i am stuck in a valley shouting up, "hey! what about me?!" ... it feels so insecure and childish to admit, but feelings are feelings are feelings. and maybe that's the thing - maybe i need to give my feelings a rest and stop worrying so much about what other women are doing and just be okay with whoever i am.

it hit me today that i will probably never have a blog that has all of these how to's and recipes and it won't all be perfectly so and that's okay. it is. no one says i have to fit that mold. i can be whatever kind of writer and picture taker that i want to be. it is okay. i can just be here in my own little corner and talk about emotions and humanness. i love that stuff. and of course the occasional how to and recipe and what nots ... because those things are really great. but honestly, im just learning as i go just like everyone else.

i just think it is so important to not feel alone in this womanhood thing. to remember that we are all worthy of great things.

well, im off to lay next to my husband and hug him because i am sorry for being stressful. i don't wanna be. here's to doing better. good night. xo.

these are just some photos i took while putting laundry away today. i don't know, it was just a really good part of my day.

yesterday

i have been feeling a bit "in it" lately. when i was little, if my brothers and i were being quiet or off, my dad would ask us what we are working out in our heads ... and i guess that's been me lately.

it really began on friday at eleanor's school christmas program. i sat in the middle of what seemed like a million folding chairs in the gymnasium. it was dark and all you could hear between songs were whispering parents and the squeaking sound a tennis shoe makes against the floor when a little kid changes sitting positions ... i sat there alone, scanning the room for eleanor. i knew she was in there, but as soon as i locked eyes with her and she gave me a big, smilely wave, it was only then that my heart began to beat a bit slower ... she was safe. the fifth graders began to play carol of the bells on their xylophones and my head went somewhere. suddenly i knew exactly who i am and who i have always been ... and i missed everyone i had ever known ... my nostalgia slowly flooded that room. i was a little kid again. it's amazing how much we lose of ourselves once becoming parents ... maybe i shouldn't say lost - but forgotten ... so then i caught myself scanning the room again, only searching for the seven year old version of myself. i wanted to walk up to her, tap her on the shoulder and scoop her up and hug her until we became one again. because i miss her ... her innocence and curiosity. her patience and hope.

yesterday morning, i woke up still yearning for myself. my bedroom was always such an important and safe place for me growing up. i spent most of my days sitting on the floor of my bedroom, looking at my things and listening to music or just sitting there ...

i hadn't officially made this room in our new house mine yet. sure it has my things in it, but gosh i hadn't even put a stereo or a record player in it yet. the record player along with all of my favorite records are sitting on top of some boxes in our basement ... and i hadn't gotten around to painting yet either. the color was like a blueish gray and yea it's okay, but on a dark, rainy day, it is sort of fluorescent in color and i just wasn't feeling it ... so yesterday, i began the process of adding kristen to my bedroom. i painted the walls a soft white and ordered a new bed frame. the record player will be moving up soon ... and my days during quiet time hours will be all about me ... im gonna worry less about what needs done around the house during those hours and just focus on who i am and what i need .. it will be good.

here are some photos that i took throughout the day. we stayed home all day and it was so nice. my favorite kind of day.

*paint for bedroom is du jour by valspar and you can see my new bed frame here  ... also, ru's adorable bunny ears came in the mail yesterday and it had us all "awwwwing" you can find that hat here

p.s. i want to thank my readers for following along here. i haven't been feeling very confident lately on social media and often times worry too much about what i post on instagram, but i never feel that way about this space. it feels so safe to me. it feels like me. and i love that. xo

p.s.s. below are some photos of the seven year old me

all the monkeys

everyday after we pick up el from school and enjoy a smoothie, we head to my sun filled bedroom to be silly and jump and play ... to be monkeys. rufus is usually still tucked away and snoozing in the wrap from our walk to school, so i sit back and watch my oldest two go nuts on my bed ...

growing up, my mother never allowed us to jump on her bed and that's okay ... we certainly had plenty of fun doing other things ... but for me .. for them ... i want this to be a fond memory from childhood ... jumping on the bed while mama sat back, watching, smiling, encouraging ...

i'm not sure how to explain the happiness that exists here, during this time. im not sure if it's the bright light coming from earth, or leftover energy from school and naps ... but i will tell you this ... there is pure joy floating around in my bedroom everyday around three thirty pm...

it is our joy. it is my happiness ...

soon i will be talking about why eleanor is no longer being taught at home by me ... why we decided to send her to public school. xo.

postpartum depression

admitting to someone that you are sad is a really hard thing to do. it can even feel impossible, like there is a force inside of you daring you to speak of it. if i say, "i need help." in an instant you become powerless. weak. more human than you'd like to be.

i knew the day was coming. i anticipated the day for nine whole months. meeting my baby. my third child. my son. i wanted that day to come more than anything in the world ... but i also knew, having two babies prior, that there is a price to pay for a love that big. nothing is free, including this. with eleanor and wolfgang, i was textbook depressed for the first couple weeks after delivery. all of my symptoms were verbatim what i read in my what to expect while expecting book. i found that to be comforting because it was all there. i knew it would pass. it was frightening, but it would slowly fade away. ... this time was the same the first few days. i had every symptom. i knew it was coming and i could handle it. i told myself, "give it time, you will be okay." ...but this time, i was not okay. i was drowning in darkness.

my mom came every evening the first week and helped out. she made dinner and got eleanor and wolfgang bathed and in bed. it was amazing.  and every night when she left, i would slowly ease up the stairs with rufus in my arms, feeling more terrified than ive ever felt ... my husband works most evenings, so it was just me, the kids, this house and my thoughts. my horrifying thoughts.

night after night, i worsened. and honestly the days weren't much better. i cried from sun up to sun down. mostly in secret, but sometimes i couldn't hide it from the kids. i felt like the loneliest person who'd ever lived. i thought, "i can't do it." over and over again. when my husband left for work every morning, in my mind i was begging him not to go. "i can't be alone. please don't leave me alone." i would watch wolfgang play on the floor and wonder why anyone would trust me with these little people. i can love them, but that's all i can do. im not capable of this. im falling apart.

i began to dread the question, "how are you doing?"... one day specifically the mailman rang the door bell and when i answered, he handed me a package and cheerfully said, "how we doin' today?" ... in my head i responded, "please help me." it was as if an asteriod was about to hit earth and i was the only person who knew it was coming ... but if i said it out loud, somehow it would make it real. make it official. i would officially need help. i would officially be broken and need fixed.

the hallucinations began towards the end of my second week. my husband was working particularly late one night and i was exhausted. you know, cluster feeding and sleeping twenty minutes here, twenty minutes there. rufus had just fed and fallen asleep, so i turned on reruns of the office and began to drift off. i awoke to the sounds of what sounded like little girls singing. i looked out my window thinking the neighbors were outside. all i saw was darkness. when i heard it again, i realized it was coming from the wall behind my bed ... my heart began to race and i immediately texted my husband, "when are you coming home?" ... i somehow managed to drift off again and when i awoke the second time, my eyes immediately fixed on a baby hanging upside down across the room by my bathroom door ... (i know this is upsetting to read. believe me, it is upsetting to write this.) it was insane. i felt insane. ... i grabbed my phone and google searched postpartum psychosis because i remembered that being a thing from the days i worked at the state behavioral hospital. i do not believe in ghosts, i knew it was all in my head. i read that it does happen, although rare. i also read that it is almost always temporary. that brought me comfort, but i was still the most scared id ever been. i wanted to call 911, but i just believed it would stop. it just had to stop. ... my husband stayed home the next night because i asked him to, but i never told him why. it isn't an easy thing to talk about or admit. no one wants to appear crazy. or even potentially laughed at for even saying such bizarre things. he wouldn't have meant any harm, but i knew it was a possibility ...

i wanted so badly to fall into his arms and sob it all away. he knew i was struggling inside, but i didn't express how serious it was. i couldn't. i couldn't go to him. it was as if i didn't have a choice. somewhere inside, a part of me made it so i had to suffer alone... he would be standing next to me or laying next to me in bed and i would tell myself, "go to him," but i couldn't. i froze ...

my little wolfgang was my savior. he didn't know it, of course, but he saved me. i knew i couldnt reveal too much sadness to eleanor because it would worry and scare her. but wolfgang, i could sit next to him on the couch, read him a book and sob through the whole thing. kiss his little head in between pages and whisper, "we will be okay. mommy will be okay. mommy loves her babies so much." ... maybe that wasn't fair to him either, but he was the only person i felt i could trust. he wouldn't pass judgement and he wouldn't find me weak or crazy. even now, i regret sharing this here because i fear you will find me crazy.

now, at four weeks postpartum, i am recovering. i experience joy throughout the day and look forward to being awake and living life. of course, some days are emotional and hard, but that's just the normalcy of motherhood. i no longer feel trapped at the bottom of a well with no hope of getting out. i feel so relieved. a part of me still feels afraid that it will come back and when it does it will stay. that is my worst fear right now ... but i am trying hard to set the fear aside and enjoy everyday. to count my blessings that the darkness came, but it didn't stay ... i even let my husband watch all three babes so i could spend a few hours at the hair salon. it was everything.

if any of you are experiencing postpartum depression and feel unable to talk to your loved ones about it, please email me. even if you ask me not to respond and just need to get your feelings and words out there for someone to read and understand ... im here. please do not hesitate to reach out and more importantly, do not go through it alone. xo.

an apple orchard and some feelings

lately i have been far too exhausted to properly express my feelings here ... well in general, i guess. i am feeling, though ... believe that. what i have really been wanting to talk about is postpartum depression ... it was pretty intense this time around. rufus turned three weeks old on monday and that is when i was finally able to come up for air. im not sure im ready to dive in too deep on the topic yet because the wound is still fresh ... but soon i will. soon.

life as a mother to three has been pretty wonderful for the most part. it's tough though. and im real tired. you know that point of exhaustion when your mind feels blank? that's me these days. i have so many feelings and thoughts, but there is a wall up in my head ... or so it seems. i struggle putting words together in a poetic way. i am in pure survivor mode. wake up, feed everyone, change everyone, clean the house, do the laundry, feed everyone, get everyone ready for bed, collapse ... im literally living in a haze. a sweet, delicious, stressful, hectic haze. i will miss it someday though. my mom tells me that all the time.

with autumn quickly approaching and baby rufus officially a part of us, the idea of getting out and adventuring appeals to me more and more everyday. i love thinking about all the fun to be had this season as a family of five ... more apple picking, pumpkins around our house, mums on the porch, hayrides, halloween, wolfgang's birthday, jumping in piles of golden leaves in our front yard ... so many good things.

today, we met a friend at an apple orchard and had the sweetest time. eleanor couldn't go because she was in school (more about that later, too), so it was just wolfgang, rufus and i. we will certainly be going again and bringing daddy and el along.

so, here are some photos of the day. it was really good. you can see photos from last year here

... as i just proofread this, i realized that it all sounds a bit jumbled and my words or thoughts arent flowing, but like i said ... im real tired. :) xo
